From molecule to textile material

The Institute of Textile Chemistry and Chemical Fibers under the direction of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Michael R. Buchmeiser deals with R&D in terms of the production and modification of fibers and textiles made of synthetic and natural polymers. The competences of the institute range from the synthesis of polymers for the production of chemical fibers via fiber production utilizing all important spinning processes, to textile finishing for the production of textiles with special properties.
Unique characteristics of the institute are: complete production chain of textile materials; expertise in all primary spinning technologies; expertise in the use of nano-materials in textile and fiber applications; functionalization and processing, from cellulose to fibers and coatings: know-how in the field of physical treatment methods (plasma, UV and electron beam hardening); integration in the material-scientific research of the University of Stuttgart including MPG and FhG.

Business units:

  • Intelligent materials and nanostructures High-performance fibers, cellulose layers, nano-composites and intelligent functions in fibers
  • Chemistry, physics and technologies of fiber production Synthesis of fibre polymers, cellulosic fibers, spinnability and fibre properties, structural investigations into fibers
  • Innovative textile finishing processes and chemistry of technical textiles Optimisation of classic finishing processes, environmentally-friendly finishing, plasma treatment, innovative dyeing and printing processes, coating and laminating, surface modification and functionalization, nonwovens, super-absorbers
  • Polymer, fiber and textile analysis Processes of physical and chemical analysis, fiber-specific testing technology
