Precursors for carbon fibers

At present, the fibers with the highest strength and modulus values are made of carbon. As a fiber component of carbon fiber composites, they are already enormously important for lightweight construction and the manufacture of high-strength structures. The DITF have at their disposal all technologies for the production of carbon fibers, from polyacrylonitrile synthesis and spinning into PAN fibers to oxidation and carbonization of the fibers and their complete characterization on a laboratory scale.

Alternative precursor materials from biogenic sources are also used during product development in close cooperation with industrial partners. Starting materials such as biogenic polyethylene make the production of carbon fibers particularly cost-effective and resource-saving. At the DITF, such novel precursors are optimized and converted into market-ready carbon fibers.
